Before you jump into answering a question, make sure you have in your mind what the question is. It is not a bad idea to start by trying to understand what's being asked. Ask politely "I apologize, but I'm unable to grasp what you're asking I would appreciate if you could clarify?" It is easier to communicate at this point than talking in a rambling manner with no any clarity, or even understanding. Remember that the essence of answering questions is to make a positive contribution to the person seeking answers. Do not waste your time. Seek understanding first.

One method that can increase your chances of responding to your question in a sensible and objective manner is when you allow the person asking the question time before asking. Some people take their time to specify exactly what they are looking for. In answering a question prior to it has been fully addressed may be disrespectful. Don't think you know what direction the question is taking, therefore you should assist the person in getting to the bottom of the matter. If you're in a hurry give the person time to "ramble" while you note important things. This also allows you time to organize and think of the most effective answer to the question. The ability to hear gives an excellent chance to succeed in your responses to questions.

You have to figure out if you're qualified to answer that question , or if someone else is. Can you legally talk on that subject (journalists could be a source of trouble even when you're not suppose to be the spokesperson of the company)? How long should your answer be? In the meantime, pauses and periods of silence prove that you're just churning up any material that you have in the mind but a clearly considered answer is about to be delivered. You can actually prepare your audience member for an answer by telling them "Let me think ..., Let me look around." ..". So that the person does not have to sit in silence thinking that they aren't hearing that you're ignoring etc. Also, thinking about it helps to think of statements that you'll be happy regarding later. You can figure out the best approach to address the issue with wisdom without leaving the marks of a wound or fresh ones.
