You can actually prepare someone who is expecting an answer by using the phrase "Let me think ..., Let me think." ..". So that the person does not sit around thinking there is nothing you've heard, you are simply ignoring, etc. Think through your thoughts and you'll be able to think of statements which you'll not regret for later. You can identify the most effective method of answering with wisdom without leaving the person with scratches or fresh wounds.
