A question can be described as a sentence that seeks to get a reaction or answer. On a daily basis, people are asked to receive questions. There are certain questions that are open ended which require explanation, explanation and the like, while others have a closed-ended format that requires only an answer of a yes or no. Some people will ask questions that don't necessarily need a response, but are simply for someone to listen to (rhetoric types of questions). It is based on the structure of the query, the response that follows must be in line with what they are looking for in the first place. A lot of students fail exams in no way because they're dull and uninterested but because they are unable to grasp what is asked to them. Unable to formulate the question correctly leads to incorrect action or response. After your presentation, feel comfortable if people have questions. It may be a sign that the audience was engaged with your presentation and the talk enticed others. How you answer those questions will improve the perception of your audience about you or improve their confidence in the quality of your product or services. As a professional you will be required learn how to ask pertinent queries, but you will also need to know how to respond to questions efficiently.

Before you get started on answering a question, make sure you have in your mind what the question is. There's no harm in having a clear understanding of what is being asked. You can ask politely "I apologize, I'm not sure if I understand what you are asking, would you mind rephrasing?" You will communicate better in such an instance than shouting at the top of your lungs with no sense of clarity and understanding. The purpose behind answering questions is for you to make a positive contribution to the person searching for an answer. Don't waste your time. Seek understanding first.

One strategy to increase your chances of responding to the question in a timely and objective way is to ensure that you give the person asking the question enough time to finish asking. Some people may take their time to elaborate on what they want to know. Being able to answer a problem before it is answered fully could appear as if you're being disrespectful. Don't assume you are aware of where the person is asking you, hence you need to assist the person in getting to the bottom of the matter. If you're on time then let the individual "ramble" while you take note of the most important points. It also gives you time to think through and formulate one of the most suitable answers to the question. The ability to listen provides you a higher chance of success in the answer to questions.

You must determine if you're qualified to answer this query or if somebody else is. Does your license permit you to speak about this subject (journalists have the power to make you feel uncomfortable even though you're not required to be the spokesperson of the company)? How deep should the answer be? Moments of silence and pauses demonstrate that you're not just producing whatever material is in your mind, but a deliberate answer is on the horizon. You can actually prepare the person in the audience for to answer you by declaring "Let me think ..., Let me think." ..". That way the person does not have to sit in silence thinking that you didn't hear that you're ignoring, etc. This helps to make statements that you won't regret about later. You can assess the best way to answer with wisdom without leaving the person with wounded or new wounds.
