One way that can enhance your efficiency in responding to your question in a sensible and objective way is if you give the person posing the question enough time to finish asking. Many people will take the time to clearly define what they are looking for. The answer to a query before it is fully asked may seem an act of disrespect. It is not a good idea to assume you know the direction the person is asking you, hence you must assist the individual find the answer. If you're in a hurry, let the person "ramble" while you note important factors. It also gives you time to organize and think of what is the best way to answer the question. The ability of listening gives an excellent chance to succeed in your answering of questions.

You must determine if you are competent to answer the question or whether someone else is. Does your license permit you to speak about the subject (journalists can be very threatening even if you are not meant to be the company spokesperson)? How long should your answer be? Moments of silence and pauses let you know that you're not just making up whatever substance you've got in your mind, but a thought through answer is coming. You can actually prepare your audience member for an answer by telling them "Let me think ..., Let me take a look." ..". So that the person does not sit there and think you have not heard and you're just ignoring, etc. It also allows you to formulate statements that you won't regret regarding later. You can figure out the best option to speak with confidence without leaving scars or fresh wounds.
