Remember that the reason for answering questions is for you to provide a valuable contribution to the one who is seeking an answer. Do not waste time. Seek understanding first.

One technique that will increase the likelihood of you answering the question in a timely and objective manner is when you allow the person who asked the question the time to finish asking. Some people may take their time to clarify exactly what they want to know. The answer to a query before it is answered fully could appear as if you're being disrespectful. Don't think you know exactly where the question is going hence you should assist the person find the answer. If you're not pressed for time, let the person "ramble" while you take note of key aspects. This gives you time to synthesize and think of your best solution to the question. Being able to listen can give an excellent chance to succeed in your responses to questions.

You have to figure out if you're competent to answer the issue or is someone else. Can you legally speak about this subject (journalists may be in a position to sway you, even when you're not meant to be the spokesperson of the company)? How deep should the answer be?
