Before you take on the task of answering a question, be sure you're in the clearest of your mind about what the question is. There's no harm in trying to understand what's being asked. Make a polite request "I apologize, but I do not seem to get what you're saying Could you please clarify?" It's better to be more concise in this situation than speaking in the same voice with no knowledge or clarity. The purpose behind answering questions is to be a positive contributor to the one who is seeking an answer. Do not waste time. Seek understanding first.
One method to increase the quality of your answers to questions in a meaningful and objective way is to ensure that you give the person posing the question the time to finish asking. Some people take time to define exactly what they want to convey. A response to a question that is not given until it is clearly asked for can be irresponsible. Do not assume that you know exactly where the inquiry is heading, so you would like to assist the person to understand the question. If you have time take the time to let the person "ramble" while you take note of the most important factors. This gives you time to think through and formulate the most effective answer to the question. The ability to hear gives you a high rate of success with regards to your answers to questions.
You have to figure out if you are qualified to answer that question or if someone else has the. Can you legally speak regarding the topic (journalists can haunt you even when you're not supposed to be a company's spokesperson)? How deep should the answer be? Interrupts and moments of silence show that you are not just churning up any material that you have in the mind, but a considered answer is about to be delivered. You can prepare someone for an answer by asking "Let me think about it ..., Let me take a look." ..". This way the person is do not just sit and think you've not heard, you are simply ignoring etc. Thinking through also helps you in coming up with suggestions that you won't regret on later. You can determine the best way to present your argument with wisdom without leaving injuries or wounds that are not healed.
