A question is one that solicits for a response or answer. On a regular basis, you will receive questions. Some questions are unanswered requiring explanation, elaboration and various other things, whereas some questions are closed and require only to answer with a Yes or No. Some people will ask questions that do not require a response but just for someone to consider (rhetoric inquiries). It is based on the structure to the problem, any response which follows must answer what you are trying to find in the question. Many students fail tests and not due to being dull but rather because they fail comprehend the task being asked of them. Failure to articulate the question correctly results in an incorrect choice or response. After an presentation, it is important to be satisfied when people inquire about your presentation. It may be a sign that they were engaged in what you were presenting and that your presentation was arousing for others. How you respond to questions will improve the perception your audience has on you or increase confidence in your product or services. As a professional you will be required to master the art of asking relevant questions and, most importantly, to answer questions effectively.

Before you decide to answer a question, make sure you know in your mind what the question is about. There is no harm in seeking clarity over what is being asked. Try asking politely "I apologize, I don't seem to be able to comprehend what you're asking Do you mind rephrasing?" You'll be able to express yourself better in such a situation than shouting at the top of your lungs with no awareness or wisdom. Keep in mind that the purpose of answering questions is give a meaningful contribution to the one who is seeking an answer. Be quick to respond. Seek understanding first.

One technique that will increase your effectiveness in answering any question in an appropriate and objective manner is if you allow the person asking the question time to finish asking. Certain people prefer to elaborate on what they want to know. Being able to answer a problem before it is thoroughly asked can appear as if you're being disrespectful. Don't think you know exactly where the inquiry is heading, so you wish to help the person reach the goal. If you're on time take the time to let the person "ramble" while you take note of the most important aspects. This also allows you time to gather your thoughts and determine which answer is best to the question. The ability to hear gives the highest success rate in the answer to questions.

You need to decide if you are qualified to answer the questions or someone else does. Do you have the authority to speak about the subject (journalists can make you vulnerable even though you're not suppose to be the spokesperson of the company)? How deep should the answer be? Interrupts and moments of silence ensure that you're simply producing any unstructured material that you have in the mind, but a deliberate answer is on the horizon. You can actually prepare the person who is waiting for an answer by asking "Let me think about it ..., Let me think." ..". This way, the person will not sit idle thinking you have not heard the answer, and instead you're simply ignoring your own thoughts. This helps to come up with statements which you'll not regret on later. You can identify the most effective way to answer with wisdom without leaving marks or new wounds.
