As a professional you will be required to master that art of asking pertinent questions . But most importantly, you need to know how to effectively answer questions.

Before you begin to answer a question, be sure you're clear in your mind what the question is about. It is not a bad idea to start by seeking clarification on the topic being asked. Ask politely "I apologize, I don't seem to know what you're trying to say I would appreciate if you could clarify?" It is easier to communicate with this approach than speaking in the same voice with no discernment or clarity. Keep in mind that the purpose of answering questions is to be a positive contributor to the person searching for an answer. Do not waste your time. Seek understanding first.

One way to improve your chances of responding to your question in an accurate and objective manner is when you give the person posing the question time before asking. Some people like to describe precisely what they want to know. If you answer a question before it is fully asked may seem unprofessional. Don't presume you know the direction the question is going hence you must assist the individual get straight to the point. If you have time, let the person "ramble" while you note important aspects. It gives you time to synthesize and think of the most effective answer to the question. Listening skills give you an impressive success rate with regards to your answers to questions.

It is your responsibility to determine whether you're qualified to answer that questions or someone else does. Are you authorized to talk on this topic (journalists can make you vulnerable even when you're not intended to be company's spokesperson)? How long should your answer be? Pauses and moments of silence demonstrate that you're not just churning through whatever material you have in your mind, but a considered answer is about to be delivered. You can actually prepare the person who is waiting for an answer by asking "Let me think about it ..., Let me take a look." ..". This will help the person not sit around thinking you've missed something the answer, and instead you're simply ignoring or not paying attention. Also, thinking about it helps to make statements that you'll be happy in the future. You can evaluate the best way to present your argument with wisdom without leaving the person with wounded or new wounds.
