A question is a phrase that seeks to get a reaction or an answer. On a regular basis it is possible to be asked questions. Some questions are open-ended necessitating explanations, explanations and the like, while others need only either a Yes or No. In certain instances, other people may ask questions that do not necessarily require a response but just for someone to take note of (rhetoric questions). It is based on the structure of the issue, your response that follows should address what they are looking for in the first place. The majority of people fail in exams not because they're boring but due to their inability to be aware of the information being demanded of them. Failure to answer the question correctly can lead to a wrong action or response. After your presentation, you need to feel good if people do ask questions. It could be a sign that people were engaged by your presentation and the talk enticed others. How you respond to questions will help improve the impression your audience has on you or increase their confidence in your product or service. As a professional you will have learn questions and ask relevant questions but most importantly how you can answer them effectively.

Before you decide to answer your question, ensure you have a clear mind what the question is about. It is not a bad idea to start by seeking clarity over what is being asked. If you are asked politely "I am sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you are asking Could you please clarify?" You will communicate better at this point than you can simply talk about the topic with little clarity or understanding. Remember that the essence of answering questions is for you to make a positive contribution to the person in search of an answer. Do not waste time. Seek understanding first.

Another way to boost your effectiveness in answering a question in a relevant and objective way is if you give the person posing the question the time to finish asking. Some people like to define exactly what they want to convey. Answering a question before it is completely asked could be unprofessional. Don't think you know exactly where the person is asking you, hence you want to help the person to understand the question. If you have time you can let the person "ramble" while you take note of key points. It gives you the time to think about and synthesize the best answer to the question. Being able to listen can give you a high percentage of success in answering the questions.

You should determine if you're qualified to answer that issue or is someone else. Does your license permit you to talk about this topic (journalists can make you look bad even though you're not supposed to be to the company spokesperson)? What is the depth of your answer be? In the meantime, pauses and periods of silence indicate that you aren't just producing whatever substance you've got in your mind but a clearly reasoned out answer is on its way. You can prepare someone for an answer by asking "Let me think ..., Let me know." ..". This will help the person take a break from thinking the person hasn't heard anything the answer, and instead you're simply ignoring or not paying attention. Thinking about the situation also allows you to think of statements that you'll feel good on later. You can evaluate the best way to answer with wisdom without leaving the person with scratches or fresh wounds.
